His paranoia resulted in him trying to kill Marty and Wendy, which ultimately led Marty to accidentally shoot Mason through the neck. The Byrdes took custody of Zeke, but were forced to give custody to Darlene Snell later. A righteous preacher in Ozark Season 1, Mason Young learned the hard way what happens when rejecting an offer from dangerous people. His pregnant wife was brutally murdered by the Snells shortly after they delivered his son Zeke. The trauma from the event drove Mason from the Ozarks, only to become a homeless preacher on street corners.

Before we get to other big moment, a quick note on the car crash that opened season four part one. In the scene, if you don't recall, the whole Byrde family is in the family car talking about their big move to Chicago now that they're done with the Ozarks. Amid the euphoria, Marty stops paying attention and swerves off the road, making the car flip and tumble off road. That plan goes awry when Camila goes to prison to say a final goodbye to Omar. There Omar, realizing something's amiss, tells Camila that he didn't kill Javi at all and that he doesn't know who did -- he only knows what Wendy Byrde told him. Camila believes him but goes through with the assassination anyway.

If Ruth is going to get killed off, you know she’s getting killed off in dramatic fashion. I overestimated Ozark’s characters, just as I overestimated the show’s arc toward resolution. No matter how much we yearn for freedom, no one escapes unscathed—if they manage to escape at all.
He essentially tells the family that their time is up, they don't get to win like the Kennedys or come off unscathed. However, Jonah and Charlotte have now appeared in the garden and Jonah is holding a shotgun, which we hear go off as the screen goes black. Cartel boss Navarro is transferred in the middle of the night only to be shot, making his sister Camilla the new head of the cartel. Camilla goes into business with the Byrdes and Clare, the CEO of the pharmaceutical company, but issues her a stern warning.
In part 1, Marty and Wendy agreed with Navarro that they could be free of the cartel if they procured a deal for him with the FBI. That worked out until Maya Miller (Jessica Frances Dukes) arrested him, so the Byrdes re-negotiated a deal – but this time between Javi and the Bureau. But Javi ends up dead thanks to Ruth, so the Byrdes try again with Navarro. This time, though, they'll need to get him transferred to a Mexican prison first. There, he could be freed and resume control of the cartel. With the FBI deal with Javi now gone, the Byrdes fall back on Navarro again, but for their plans to work the cartel boss can't be in prison.

Charlotte and Jonah, knowing that they were in danger and scared that if they refused it would hurt their parents’ chances of getting free, agreed to go with him. Nothing Marty or Wendy said could make their kids come back. That’s why Marty enlisted the help of one Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner). Because just as Mel finishes his speech, Jonah and Charlotte emerge, with Jonah aiming a gun at Mel. The screen cuts to black — and we hear a gun shot before the credits roll. The bulk of the finale is spent following the criminal power couple as they plan to leave the Ozarks with their kids Jonah and Charlotte (Skylar Gaertner and Sofia Hublitz).

Wendy and Marty offer to pay him any sum of money he wants – but Mel, one of the few characters with a moral compass, isn't interested. Mel holds a goat-shaped jar containing Ben's ashes and tells the Byrdes he has all the DNA evidence he needs to send them to prison. Don't trust hardened murderers, even if you are one.

After Clare gives in, Camila arrives to the (now demolished) Langmore trailers to confront Ruth. Rather than trying to escape her fate, Ruth says she's not sorry, and challenges Camila to pull the trigger when she doesn't immediately fire.
In the second episode of season four part two, Ruth traps and kills Javi. Ruth hijacks a dinner between the Byrdes and Shaw Medical CEO Clare Shaw. Before the latest batch of episodes, Navarro was apprehended by the FBI before agreeing to be their informant to help take down the cartel for good. Navarro was poised to reaffirm his extradition deal with the federal agents as long as he can regain control of the cartel. To do so, Navarro enlisted Marty to deliver the message that he killed Javi (not Ruth) and was subsequently sent to act as an emissary in Mexico. An attempt on Navarro's life, which was ordered by his sister Camila, was made after those stunning revelations came to light.
Camilla tells Clare if she knows anything about the death of her son Javi and hasn't told her, if she finds out she lied she's going to make sure she's slit in half. Clare almost immediately gives up Ruth Langmore's name and seals her fate, leading her to be shot by the new Cartel boss. And that's exactly what happens in the series finale. Just as everything seems to be going smoothly for the Byrdes, Camila Elizonndro (Veronica Falcón) – the sister to drug lord Omar Navarro – has one last piece of business to take care of. I use the word “overestimate,” because Ozark, the prestige-adjacent Netflix drama about a Chicago family lured into laundering money for a drug cartel, has already played with making the underestimated its heroes.
Clare wasn't happy about continuing to work with the cartel, but Wendy outmanoeuvred her, so she had to carry on. She was a witness to Javi's death, and kept quiet until threatened by Camila, when she revealed the truth about who killed the former cartel boss. That's the last we see of her, so she survives the series.
